Foreign Policy for Peace & Human Rights

Canada’s global reputation as a peacekeeper and defender of human rights has weakened under successive governments prioritizing economic interests over ethical leadership. It’s time to return Canada to its role as a principled voice on the world stage.

Where Other Parties Stand

  • Liberals: Despite promises to prioritize human rights, the Liberals have continued arms sales to authoritarian regimes, including Saudi Arabia—despite documented human rights abuses. They have also been slow to clearly support Palestinian rights, hesitating on calling for immediate ceasefires amid humanitarian crises.
  • Conservatives: Consistently prioritize economic interests and military alignment over humanitarian concerns, advocating for arms deals regardless of human rights violations. Their stance often neglects the climate justice and humanitarian needs of vulnerable nations.
  • NDP: Often align rhetorically with progressive human rights stances but frequently hesitate to firmly challenge Canada’s status quo on arms sales, economic interests abroad, and explicit support for Palestinian rights.

Green Party’s Commitment to Peace, Human Rights, and Justice:

We believe Canada must lead ethically and courageously by:

  • Advocating for Peaceful Conflict Resolution:
    • Immediately end arms sales to all regimes violating human rights.
    • Prioritize diplomatic engagement and peaceful solutions aligned with international law.
  • Supporting Palestinian Human Rights and Self-Determination:
    • Clearly affirm Canada’s support for Palestinian rights and sovereignty.
    • Demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel, accompanied by a significant increase in humanitarian aid.
    • Advocate for ending the occupation and upholding international law.
  • Promoting Climate Justice Internationally:
    • Significantly increase Canada’s support for vulnerable nations facing severe climate impacts.
    • Fund global climate adaptation and resilience projects, prioritizing equity and environmental justice.

The Green Party is committed to realigning Canada’s foreign policy around human rights, peace, and climate justice—showing the world that Canadian values are defined not by economic expediency, but by unwavering commitment to human dignity, fairness, and global responsibility.
