Democratic Reform: Every Vote Counts

Canada’s electoral system—first-past-the-post—doesn’t reflect voters’ true intentions. It often gives absolute power to parties that don’t earn a majority of votes, leaving millions feeling unheard and unrepresented.

In 2015, the Liberals explicitly promised that Canada’s electoral system would change, declaring that it would be the last election under first-past-the-post. But by 2017, they abandoned electoral reform entirely, ignoring recommendations from their own special committee and breaking trust with voters who demanded fairness and accountability.

Today, the system remains unchanged, undermining democracy and discouraging voter participation.

The Green Party’s Commitment to Fair Democracy

We will restore trust and fairness to our democracy by:

  • Implementing Proportional Representation, ensuring seats in Parliament accurately reflect Canadians’ votes.
  • Restoring per-vote subsidies so small parties can fairly compete, reducing corporate influence.
  • Establishing a Citizens’ Assembly to guide electoral reform openly and transparently.
  • Strengthening ethics and transparency laws, protecting whistleblowers, and restricting politicians from immediate lobbying post-office.
  • Enhancing civic education to encourage greater democratic engagement.

We’ll reduce the influence of corporate interests by cutting costly contracts with big consulting firms and investing in a transparent public service accountable directly to Canadians.

It’s time your voice truly counted. The Green Party will deliver the democratic reform Canada deserves.
